The Press Club

Somewhere around six years ago, I was working with Ruben at the Press Club. He knew I was doing some photography, and that I was also experimenting with video. One day he asked if I could take some photos for him. I remember my answer clearly. A straight yes, followed by a small condition. Could I also shoot a bit of video?

“Sure, why not.”

On an early summer afternoon, I found myself commuting to my usual workplace, but with a different purpose. Take a few photos, and see what I could capture on video along the way.

That day I saw everything from a different perspective. I watched the magic happen right in front of me. Creativity, rhythm, and synchrony coming together to shape the night ahead.

Before service started, I had a moment to talk with Ruben. I still remember his words.

“I like to lower the lights when service starts. The game is on. It’s like soccer, you need to get in the mood.”

It was a really good night. I got the photos he needed and played around with video. Looking back at that footage now, it’s honestly not great. But it brings me joy. It carries good memories, and that feels more important to me today than technical perfection.

I look at that work now and see how far I’ve come, and how little I knew back then. It makes me wonder what a second night would look like.

I wonder what you’d think now, Ruben. Maybe one day we’ll plan another night.
